Do you know the old Cherokee Legend about the two Wolves?
ONE EVENING, AN ELDERLY CHEROKEE TOLD HIS GRANDSON ABOUT A BATTLE THAT GOES ON INSIDE PEOPLE.
HE SAID “MY SON, THE BATTLE IS BETWEEN TWO ‘WOLVES’ INSIDE US ALL. ONE IS EVIL. IT IS ANGER, ENVY, JEALOUSY, SORROW, REGRET, GREED, ARROGANCE, SELF-PITY, GUILT, RESENTMENT, INFERIORITY, LIES, FALSE PRIDE, SUPERIORITY, AND EGO.
THE OTHER IS GOOD. IT IS JOY, PEACE LOVE, HOPE SERENITY, HUMILITY, KINDNESS, BENEVOLENCE, EMPATHY, GENEROSITY, TRUTH, COMPASSION, AND FAITH.”
THE GRANDSON THOUGH ABOUT IT FOR A MINUTE AND THEN ASKED HIS GRANDFATHER:
“WHICH WOLF WINS?…”
THE OLD CHEROKEE SIMPLY REPLIED, “THE ONE THAT YOU FEED”
I quite like this story because it demonstrates the ability we all have – to choose your state of mind or the mind-set you feed! It also makes me think about the hundreds of people I had the pleasure coaching the last 11 years. I have heard people, again and again, start any journey towards a goal or dream with a “WHY?” The problem with WHY are that it’s easily negative/pessimistic loaded, and makes us defensive (feeding your mind negatively).
Think about it, When you ask yourself: why this, why that… it makes you look back on previous experience or challenges. The problem is that it does not have a proactive driver, a motivator to change.
You need to talk to yourself like you would like others to talk to you: In an inspiring and motivating way. Something that also challenges your state and pushes you forward – not backwards.
Try instead with:
Want will I do differently….
How will that impact me …
Do I have the tools/ability to….
How does this motivate me?
How does it make me feel?
When will I make the ….
Will I do it…
Am I ready…
Learning about yourself and understanding your own motivators are the greatest insight you can get. Understanding yourself gives you purpose and fulfilment and the coolest bonus of it are, that you become more open-minded and embracing of other people around you.
Don’t let yourself down with “WHY” but start challenges yourself and get motivated and find your purpose.
